Item 1 on The List - Try one new recipe a month.
Now for those of you that don't know me, I don't cook. I can boil water and make grill cheese but that's about it. The cooking is primarily done by my husband, who enjoys it. Which is also the problem for my lack of culinary skills. I once asked Olivia what she wanted for dinner and her reply was, "I'll wait for Daddy to get home."
So starts my quest to further my cooking skills. I started with something I thought would be relatively easy, cinnamon rolls. Not the Pillsbury kind either, which Ray suggested. Instead I had to dissolve yeast and knead dough, two things I've never done before. It took three tries to actually dissolve the yeast and even then I mixed it with my flour, salt, and sugar hoping for the best. So really how do you knead dough? Not sure I did that right either but I kneaded until my arms were sore. Then I added the brown sugar and cinnamon and shaped it into a roll. I cut it into 9 pieces (it said cut into equal pieces but obviously that didn't happen) and placed it in a baking dish. I wrapped them and put them in the fridge overnight.
I was actually quite nervous to open the fridge the next morning. I wasn't sure what I was expecting but they looked relatively the same as the night before. So I preheated the oven and baked. The recipe called for 20 minutes but after 11 they started to get brown. I saved them from an untimely death and served them to the family. Here is the result...
As you can see frosting is missing from the cinnamon rolls. The recipe didn't call for any and I didn't think to add anything else. They were actually edible (those were Ray's words). The girls enjoyed them as did Ray's mom and I. We don't like things to sweet so we thought they were perfect. My first recipe was a success and I'm not completely turned off to trying my hand at it again. Here is a link to the recipe I used (so you can see how they were really suppose to turn out) -
